The waking hours: The mornings light, redemption, hope, coming home, one more chance, this time it will work out.
- This song tracked the morning after Any Old Love parts 1,2,3,4 were recorded. It was again recorded live, sitting around a few mics in the upstairs studio at Gasworks. So with the night before in mind, a little weary and worse for wear, Halfway worked on the incomplete bones of The Waking Hours. It was the first time the band had tried to play it in full and the song structure was mapped out on scraps of paper at everyone’s feet. John Busby and Chris Dale are on acoustic guitar and vocals; with Luke Peacock on nylon guitar and John Willsteed on fretless bass. Ben Johnson’s backing vocal was added to the outro later, as was the French Horn which was played by Aled Humphries under the direction of John Willsteed.
- As a side node: One of the great parts of the sessions was reuniting ex-Go Between members Robert Forster (Producer) and John Willsteed (Halfway member) for the recording and mixing of ‘Any old Love’. The last time they had worked together in a studio was on the Go Betweens “16 Lovers Lane” in 1988.
- The making of ‘Any Old Love’ was rewarding process. But, like anything great it was also a lot of work, which tested our tolerance, and at times the foundation of Halfway. But we are a better band for it. Thank you for listening to Halfways ‘Any Old Love’
Though he was uncredited, Steve Albini was behind the boards on this noise rock classic from the forever feral Jesus Lizard. Bandcamp New & Notable May 8, 2024
